Compulsory Education, 1887, by Briton Rivière (1840-1920)

The painting presents a humorous domestic scene centred on a reluctant schoolgirl. The child, dressed for lessons, appears reading, while a large, dignified dog seems to share his reluctance to leave the comfort of home. Rivière’s skill in depicting animals gives the composition warmth and character.
