Sławne potomstwo lechowe,
na Wasze troski domowe
zejmę lutnię wielostronną
już od roku zawieszoną
Przy której głosach łagodnych
wzruszę pienia uszu godnych,
wzruszę wdzięcznych rymów lackich,
uciechy krain sarmackich.
Bo po zejściu Stefanowym
kwitnie znowu z panem nowym
Wasza przesławna stolica
za Zygmunta królewica.
Temu gwoli dziś śpiewajmy,
tego z tryumfem witajmy,
temu gwoli wielkim kołem
stanąwszy uderzmy czołem
Cnych Jagiełłów jedynemu
potomkowi fortunnemu
którego kwitnące skronie
zdobią dwie świetne koronie,
Zdobi fortuna łaskawa
i niewinność wszystkim prawa,
zdobi z powagą cześć ona
wielkim królom przyrodzona,
Zdobi tryumf znakomity,
o
czym już głos pospolity
granice
świata przenika,
a
sława obłoków tyka.
English version:
Illustrious scions of Lech,
to address your domestic cares,
I take down the many-stringed lute—
long left hanging in silence—
And to its gentle, soothing tones
I raise a song worthy of the ear,
weaving graceful Polish rhymes—
the delights of Sarmatian lands.
For since the passing of Stefan,
your renowned capital blooms anew
under its new sovereign,
Prince Sigismund.
Let us sing in his honour today,
let us welcome him with triumph;
let us gather in a great circle
and bow low before him—
The sole and fortunate heir
of the noble Jagiellonian line,
whose flourishing brow
is graced by two brilliant crowns,
Graced by Fortune’s favour
and an innocence known to all,
graced by the solemn dignity
inherent in great kings,
And graced by a glorious triumph—
tidings of which now spread
beyond the boundaries of the world,
as his fame reaches the very clouds.
According to Polish
folklore, Lech was the mythical founder of the Polish state (alongside his
brothers Czech and Rus). The lyrics celebrate "the glorious descendants of
Lech". It refers poetically to the Polish nation or the Lechites, tracing
ancestry back to the legendary founding father of Poland, Lech.
