Priseld (Midsummer Eve Bonfire, 1915) by Nikolai Astrup

One of the most renowned Norwegian artists, Nikolai Astrup was a distinctive, innovative artist noted principally for his intense use of colour depicting the lush landscapes of Vestlandet featuring the traditional way of life in the region. His work transformed the rugged Norwegian landscape into a mythical, living entity. Astrup sought a national "visual language" that evoked the traditions and folklore of his homeland.
