popular Sicilian song Lu Rusciu de lu Mare (translated as "The Sound of the Sea") tell a
story of an impossible love between a soldier and a noblewoman, specifically
the daughter of a King. We are
therefore talking about an era where it was still very important to keep up
appearances and not shirk one’s duties. The relationship between the two lovers
was so hindered that in the song it is compared to the historical conflict
between the Turks and the Spanish, historical invaders of the territory.
