George Hitchcock, 1850–1913,
was an American painter best known for his luminous landscapes and genre scenes
set in the Netherlands. Trained in law at Harvard, he later pursued art in
Europe, studying at the Académie Julian in Paris and under leading artists in
The Hague. Hitchcock gained acclaim for his Dutch flower fields and peasant
women. He often painted en plein air, capturing the atmospheric qualities of
the landscape.
