A pretty young peasant
girl sitting in an autumnal landscape is startled by the sound of approaching
footsteps in this detailed, illustrative effort by English painter and
associate of the pre-Raphaelites Arthur Hughes (1832-1915). Many of Hughes'
paintings had this quality of 'something going on', that we are glimpsing an
instant in a wider narrative, and none more so than this.
