In 1884, the American
artist John Singer Sargent visited the Sussex home of his patrons, Edith and
Albert Vickers. During this stay, he painted "A Dinner Table at
Night," capturing an intimate post-dinner moment. The scene depicts Edith
Vickers seated at a dining table, gazing directly at the viewer, while her
husband, Albert, is partially visible, engaged in smoking a cigar. The original
title, "Le Verre de Porto" (The Glass of Port), suggests a focus on
the leisurely conclusion of a meal, highlighting the social customs of the
time.
