My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean – Traditional Folk Song

Many historians believe the song is a coded lament for Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie). He fled to France after losing the Battle of Culloden during the Jacobite rising of 1745.  An English music hall precursor called "My Barney Lies Over the Ocean" may have existed in the 1860s before the modern version evolved. Charles E. Pratt published the sheet music in 1881 as "Bring Back My Bonnie to Me" using the pseudonyms H.J. Fuller and J.T. Wood.
