Briton Riviere - Compulsory Education, 1887

"Compulsory Education" criticizes the rigidity and potential absurdity of forced learning, especially when mismatched in ability, willingness, or authority. The title is a direct reference to mandatory schooling laws introduced in Britain in the 19th century. Rivière uses the animals to satirize the idea of enforced learning and the mismatch that can occur when a subject is taught by someone clearly unqualified or when the "student" is entirely disinterested.
