Henry Herbert La Thangue - In a Cottage Garden - The Sawing Horse

I remember an old Chinese saying: "Wood warms you three times - once, when you cut it, secondly, when you carry it and finally when you burn it!" The painter not only shows a woman doing what some consider a man's work, he shows her working in partnership with her husband (presumably), who is working in the background sawing young trees off at the base to be given to her to saw into logs or fence poles, I think.
