Bertha Wegmann (1847-1926) was a Danish painter of extraordinary skill and dedication. She is considered one of the most significant painters of the Danish Realism movement. Wegmann was born in Switzerland, but because her family moved to Denmark when she was five years old, she is considered a thoroughly Danish artist. In this painting, she probably remembers her mother who died when she was ten.
