It was early, early all in the
spring,
The small birds whistled and sweetly
sing,
Changing their notes from tree to
tree
And the song they sang was Old
Ireland free.
It was early, early on the Tuesday
night,
The yeoman cavalry gave me a fright.
To my misfortune and sad downfall
I was taken prisoner by Lord
Cornwall.
I choose the Black, I choose the
Blue,
I forsook the Red and Orange too,
I did forsake them and them deny,
I choose the Green, and for it I'll
die...
As I was mounted on the gallows high
My aged father was standing by;
My aged father did me deny
And the name he gave me was the Croppy Boy.
"The Croppy
Boy" is an Irish ballad set during the Irish Rebellion of 1798 which describes
the fate of a fictional Society of United Irishmen rebel, who were also known
as croppies. Versions of the ballad first appeared shortly after the
rebellion's suppression, being sung by street peddlers in Ireland. There were
also several broadside versions of the ballad that were printed. These
typically include the phrase "500 Guineas" or "one thousand
pounds", and are also sung to the tune of the old Irish air Cailín Óg a
Stór. They may form the basis for the ballad Lady Franklin's Lament.
The noted singer Anne
Byrne (1943-2020) accompanied by Paddy Roche and Mick Crotty recorded in 1967 a
famous version of "The Croppy Boy", on the album, "I Chose the
Green".
