In post-war Paris in
1918, Alice Bailly created some outstanding works of exceptional quality. This
painting is one such magical work of impressive beauty. The person depicted is
Ludmilla Botkine, presumably a Russian émigré, whom Alice Bailly had met in the
French metropolis. From the early 1910s, Bailly maintained contact with the
artistic avant-garde and with the young intellectuals of the time, such as
Raoul Dufy, André Lhote, Jean Marchand and Sofia Lewitzka.
